Before You Start/What You’ll Need

I’m going to try keeping this post as short as possible, giving as much information as possible at the same time. Consider this my routine for keeping my home as fresh as possible.

When it comes to how to remove dog smell from blankets and around your house, you can use a few home/basic supplies which are just as effective but I’m going to recommend and base this guide off of 2 products that I always use.

I started off using basic homemade solutions involving the likes of baking soda and vinegar which as I mentioned was effective for removing odours but it doesn’t give the freshness and versatility that you get from actual products.

Introducing Zoflora

Zoflora is a popular cleaning product and has been for some time now. A little over a year ago, I discovered they did a ā€œpets rangeā€ to eliminate odours and disinfect as well and this was where everything changed.

Why Zoflora?

So why would I start buying a product instead of using the homemade alternative that I was already using?

Honestly it was versatility. There are so many different ways that you can use Zoflora around the home with this concentrated disinfectant:

  • Add it to washing machine to neutralise odours
  • Spray and wipe down surfaces
  • Add it to your mop for flooring
  • Use for soaking

There are also a number of benefits that Zoflora boasts that you just don’t get from using homemade and basic solutions.

Along with odour neutralisation Zoflora kills 99.9% bacteria including those that cause kennel cough and the flu!

My 5 Top Tips To Remove Dog Odours From Your Home!

#1 – Regularly Wash Your Dog

Sometimes when trying to find the solution in how to get dog smell out of blankets, the problem could be our dogs.

Things like washing your dogs ears (where yeast builds up which can cause bad odours), using dry shampoo and making sure that your dog is clean and dry after your walks will keep your dog clean and fresh and avoid them becoming the root cause of the issue.

#2 – Use Disinfectant Mist on Furniture

Along with blankets and bedding, there are other places where your dogs smell can get trapped.

For example using the disinfectant mist on surfaces such as your sofa, curtains and carpet/rugs will help you eliminate any lingering odours and provide a new found freshness.

#3 – Stay on Top of Your Flooring

Believe it or not your floor can be a big source of odour or can contribute to the issue for sure.

You want to make sure that firstly if your dog has any accidents that you clean them up straight away. Once again I recommend Zoflora here, dilute with water and spray onto the surface and wipe/scrub down.

#4 – Use The Sun

There is an old school method of removing odours which is just put the item out in the sun. Now I haven’t fully tried this option but before I clean anything of Jasper’s whether it’s a blanket or his bedding, I will try leaving it outside for a few hours before washing it (if the weather permits). After it’s usual clean I will also try getting back outside to air dry.

I’ve found that when things arent dried and aired properly you don’t get as much as a fresh result and end up back in the same place. Obviously this is weather dependent but I suggest doing this where you can.

#5 – Regularly Clean Your Dogs Bedding and Blankets

First thing is first, your going to want to make sure that you regularly are cleaning your dogs bedding and blankets. The longer you leave before cleans, the more ā€œpredominantā€ that smell is going to be.

Blankets and bedding should be easy to clean. Firstly shake off any dry debris and then following the wash instructions fling them in the wash machine with a capful of Zoflora (you may have to disassemble blankets and bedding prior to this).

If your dog has a crate then using diluted concentrate you can wipe and scrub and disinfect that too. You can actually find more information on how to clean a dog crate effectively and safely on my blog too.
